Stratford Upon Avon is the home of the Bard, possibly the greatest writer in the history of the English language. This theatrical connection and the tourism it has generated has led to this being a veritable paradise for culture seekers. This hat can be seen in everything from the period hotels to the historic theatres and the glorious tearooms. And it’s the latter we will be focusing on here as we look for the best afternoon tea in Stratford Upon Avon.
Afternoon Tea at Hathaway Tea Rooms
This is a Grade II building with a real Shakespearean connection. Not only is it named after the bard’s wife, but it has been standing since the days the great writer walked these streets. This is high tea at its very best, with a historic setting, impeccable service and some great food to boot.
All food at the Hathaway Tea Rooms is prepared on site and served fresh. And afternoon tea at Hathaway Tea Rooms is not just an afterthought. This is still a restaurant and one that serves some great breakfast and lunch, but the star attraction is the cream tea. They have a selection of sandwiches for you to enjoy, a number of teas for you to sample and a huge lunch menu if you decide to eat something a little more substantial instead.
Afternoon Tea at the Arden Hotel
This venue is not as historic. It doesn’t have the low ceilings and black timber beams. It has more of a modern look, but it’s a hotel with 45 bedrooms across three floors, so it’s to be expected. There are rooms with views over the River Avon, some great food and a high tea menu that won’t leave you wanting.
It’s more on the expensive side than some of the others here and because it’s a big hotel that hosts conferences, serves breakfasts, lunch and dinner, the cream tea comes across as a bit of an afterthought.
Don’t worry about missing out on the history that this town offers because while the Arden may not be the perfect Elizabethan building, it happens to be sitting directly opposite the Shakespeare Company Theatre, which is.
Afternoon Tea at the Rooftop Restaurant
For a true Stratford Upon Avon afternoon tea experience, head to the third floor of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre for some Champagne, an extensive wine list, a variety of loose teas and plenty of food, all of which creates the ultimate Sparkling Cream Tea experience.
The menu is always changing here, adapting to the ever changing season and to the whims of the talented chef. All of the tea and coffee served is also fair-trade and 100% organic and if you have allergies then you will be happy to know that they can cater for you. They have options for dairy-free, gluten-free, vegan and more—just let them know about your needs at the time you make your booking.
You can enjoy your tea and your sandwiches as you look over the stunning River Avon and take in all of the beauty of this glorious town just as the bard would have done many hundreds of years earlier.
