Teekanne Tea is one of the oldest tea companies in the Western world. They may have even been responsible for the invention of the tea bag. Thinking of buying Teekanne Tea? Read on for all you need to know about this German company.
Who are Teekanne Tea?
Teekanne Tea, based in Germany, sell a selection of green, black, herbal and fruit teas. The company has a bit of a history, too. Started in 1882, the Teekanne Tea company was the first to sell its teas in tins.
During World War I, it’s thought that Teekanne were the first to mass produce tea bags. They produced thousands of “tea bombs,” or sweet tea infusions wrapped in gauze pouches. Those tea bombs were then “dropped” on civilians and soldiers as a bit of a morale boost.
The tea bombs were made by hand, but it was soon after in 1929 that the Pompadour machine was produced. This was the first tea bag packing machine, and it had the ability to create 35 tea bags every minute.
In the years that followed, one of the owners of the company died in the Hindenburg explosion, and the company suffered greatly because of that tragedy and the economic impact of World War II. As a result, the company was forced to restructure. Headquarters were moved to Düsseldorf in the late 1950s, and the Teekanne we know today was formed.
